Project Managers (PMs) lead cross-functional/virtual teams to drive high-profile projects through all activities in the project's life-cycle (initiation, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and closing) following industry-standard project management methods and best practices. They are accountable for the project scope, project team, resources, and the success of the project. Are typically managing projects of medium to large size and complexity.

Project Managers are the primary conduit between the project team members and the business areas. This is important for communicating and encouraging the need for transformation and change within the business area in tandem with the delivery of new capabilities/procedures from the project. The readiness of the business to exploit the new capabilities/procedures is crucial to the success of projects. Additionally, Project Managers are the first point of contact for any issues or discrepancies before the problem escalates to higher authorities.


  1. Requirements Definition
    1. May be asked to develop and implement business requirements as well as leading and facilitating cross-functional, cross-line of business teams.
  2. Planning for Project Resources
    1. Provides leadership in the implementation of projects with cross functional business partners, recognizing the significance of competing priorities and strategies, and adjusting as necessary.
    2. Create a feasible plan that achieves the goals and objectives of the project and aligns with the organization's overall business strategy.
      1. Gather and review stakeholder information such as the below bullet points, work with teams to determine if solutions will work, and recommend the best option to the stakeholders.
        1. Define the project's scope

        3. Estimate time and financial commitments with the assistance of project leaders

  3. Assemble and lead the Project Team
    1. Collaborate with Senior Management to identify which resources will work on the project
    2. Assign tasks and deadlines to the team
    3. Ensure the team has the tools they need to complete the work
    4. Provide team with a collaborative environment and communications tools
    5. Ensure team members are adequately prepared for any externally facing meetings prior to the meeting
  4. Time Management
    1. Define, schedule, and accurately estimate task duration to develop and maintain a realistic schedule
    2. Ensure action items are documented, communicated to owners, and completed as planned
  5. Budget
    1. Identify appropriate funding needs and obtain approvals
    2. Keep project within budget by monitoring the actual spend compared to planned budget, adjusting appropriately as needed.
  6. Quality and Satisfaction
    1. Identify project KPIs and report regularly, adjusting per stakeholder feedback if necessary
    2. Communicate all KPIs to project team
  7. Management of Issues and Risks
    1. Resolve issues quickly so the project is not taken off track
    2. Anticipate risks and create contingency/mitigation plans for what to do in the event they should occur
  8. Monitoring Progress and Controlling the Project
    1. Measure project progress against the plan.
    2. Requires collecting data from project team members
    3. Monitor overall progress and use of resources, initiating corrective action where necessary
    4. As changes take place, adjust the plan or reallocate resources to accommodate the approved changes, following the project's agreed-upon change control process.
    5. Facilitate meetings to drive to decisions
    6. Adhere to a sound change management process
    7. Maintain an awareness of potential interdependencies both internal and external to the project along with their impact
  9. Reporting and Documentation
    1. Prepares and executes communication plan and supporting materials
    2. Create progress reports and metrics to ensure all project team members, stakeholders, sponsors, and the PMO Director are aware of a project's status at appropriate intervals, escalating urgent matters accordingly. Provide realistic predictions as to the project's final stage. Keep all team members informed of changes and their impacts.
      1. Drive regular reviews of the initiative with business management.
    3. Archive all project documentation for audit purposes as well as to provide a history that can be revisited when planning or a similar project in the future.
    4. Liaise with appointed project stakeholders and sponsors to assure the overall direction and integrity of the project are maintained.
    5. Conducting a project evaluation review to assess how well the project was managed and delivered, preparing any follow-up action item recommendations.
    6. Conduct analysis and partner with Finance to develop reports on budget/forecasting and financials related to the project

  • College degree in business or other related field or equivalent professional experience
  • 2-4 years of experience managing and implementing medium to large-scale complex projects
